about me
my journey
My name is Alexandra (they/them), and I also go by Ally, Xan, or Alex for short. I was born and raised in New Jersey and at 18, I moved to Maryland to attend Towson University where I pursued a Bachelors of Music in vocal performance. Now, I live in Baltimore and am a holistic voice educator, sound healer, vocalist, and yoga instructor. In my work, I draw inspiration from many spiritual, musical, and healing traditions, using breath, sound, intention, and movement to create grounded spaces for exploration and transformation.
i've gone through hell and came out singing
My own relationship with spirituality, music, and my voice has had a lot of highs and lows. I was raised as a Christian and very involved in the music events at church, which had a huge affect on me, for better and for worse. As a result of my religious upbringing, I grew up with a strong community and musical education, but also the anxiety of constantly being evaluated; by my parents, by authority figures, or by God. For most of my life, I’ve struggled with my many neurodivergences, like anxiety, autism, ADHD, and OCD to name a few. Because of this and my religion, I absorbed a lot of rigid beliefs about what I was allowed to be, and my vibrant queerness was stifled by gender roles and moral perfectionism. However, music and singing was one of the few places I found genuine comfort and peace.
Through my late teens and early 20’s, as I started to learn everything I had been missing, many mental and physical health problems started to appear. Even after I had the language to explain my identity and process my experiences, I still felt deeply uncertain of myself. On my healing journey, I suffered from impostor syndrome and struggled with my trauma triggers and sensory sensitivities. I didn't know yet how to express myself or my new gender identity, and I always felt like I was masking; “playing the part” instead of feeling truly connected to myself or to others.
The symptoms eventually got so bad that my work and my singing started to suffer. My mind was so consumed with ruminations and "what if's" that I could barely do anything at all.
I got tired of the stress of masking all the time, to the point that it was taking a toll on my physical body. I could no longer juggle the version of myself that I had created to please others with the true self that I knew existed inside. Sound medicine, yoga, and meditation helped me reconnect to myself again, and find spirituality again in a way that mattered to me.
music is medicine
I finally had the realization that I had to stop treating my body and my voice as tools to be manipulated and start seeing them as a united, living, breathing being. This inspired my pivot from rigid classical voice training towards a more holistic and intuitive approach to the human voice as an instrument. This shift applied directly to my work, as well as manifesting in my spiritual life. I now embrace being non-binary as a spiritual identity as well as a gender identity. I use my voice for myself again, and I've gained more trust in my neurodivergent brain and body, learning to read their signals. I started taking care of myself in ways that actually felt good for me, instead of just copying others and hoping for it to finally work. I am stronger now than I’ve ever been, and I feel a sense of loving ownership over my body, my brain, and my voice.
Instead of holding in all my neurodivergent impulses, now I'm comfortable being unmasked with the people who are close to me. And even when I do have to mask or perform, it doesn’t feel like I’m holding in this immense pressure underneath. I'm able to do it with grace, authenticity, and I don’t feel guilty or ashamed for not fitting in the box anymore. Instead, I feel free from it. I am grateful every day for the sound medicine practices that changed my life. My mission is to share these practices with as many people as I can and build a loving spiritual community along the way.
