sound healing

What is sound healing?

"Sound healing" is a broad term, spanning from ancient spiritual traditions, to modern musical and vibrational therapies. Generally speaking, it is the intentional use of specific sounds to facilitate healing and connection to the natural rhythms of the body. Sound is not just heard by the ears, but also felt by the body and processed by the entire nervous system. This makes it a potent tool for helping scattered minds and tense bodies to relax and let go. Like acupuncture or Reiki, it helps to activate the natural healing abilities of the body and create more balance.

How does it work?

When your body hears and feels the steady input of sound waves, it signals to the brain and body that you are stable and safe. This happens because humans are neurologically hardwired to synchronize with musical pitches and rhythms, especially when those sounds are soothing and comforting. The body relaxes more easily, and listening to sounds just naturally feels good. The constantly changing input of the sound also helps your mind to stay present in the moment, making it much easier to meditate or rest.

What actually happens in your body?

Sound interacts with the body on a very foundational level, as a physical force of waves that pass through body tissues and resonate the water inside of you. This deep, gentle stimulation allows the body to feel and relax much more deeply than in normal daily life. Sound vibrations also affect your brain, slowing down your brain waves from beta (thinking, planning, problem solving) down to theta and delta (deep rest, tissue restoration, visualization and dreaming). New studies are still emerging on the effects of sound on the human body,

What can sound healing help me with?

Sound healing provides a variety of benefits, such as better sleep, less anxiety, more mental clarity, and less pain and fatigue. However, sound interacts with everyone differently depending on many factors, and it can be applied in a variety of ways to help support your health. It can support managing the symptoms of chronic illnesses, complement your mental health care, or aid in the recovery process from illnesses, surgeries, or injuries.

sound baths

What is a sound bath?

A sound bath is a community sound healing session, where participants will sit or lie down to listen to healing music together. There's a vast variety of instruments that can be used, but singing bowls, gongs, rain sticks, chimes, flutes, and drums are fairly common. Sound baths are also offered as private sessions.

What should I bring, or do to prepare?

You can bring as much or as little as you want to a sound bath. Many people like to lie down on a yoga mat, with some blankets and pillows for extra comfort and support. You can also bring a journal if you'd like to write about your experience during or afterwards. Make sure to wear something comfortable, drink lots of water, and bring all of your favorite cozy items to lay with.

What do I do during the sound bath?

During a sound healing session, you can sit or lie down however you are comfortable.  Each session begins with some guided deep breathing and a few moments to gather your focus to the present moment. Then, most of the session is spent relaxing and listening to different sounds and instruments. Many people choose to practice deep breathing while they listen, sometimes people fall asleep, and occasionally people like to get up and stretch to move the energy in their body. There is no right or wrong way to experience a session.

What should I expect after a sound bath?

After a sound healing session, people often notice a change in their energy, or their “felt sense” of their mind and/or body. For some, this might be a sense of lightness, openness, or stillness. Others report a more heavy, relaxed feeling and less anxiety or restlessness. Some feel energized and joyful, with less tension and more mobility in their body. Sound affects everyone differently, and sometimes, deeper held emotions can be brought to the surface through this practice. It's important to take care and be kind to yourself in the hours and days following. Drinking lots of water, spending time connecting to nature, practicing yoga or meditation, taking extra time to rest, and journaling about your session are all great ways to integrate your experience.

What is hands-on Reiki?

Reiki is an energy healing practice developed by Mikao Usui. The word Reiki means "universal life energy", and this energy is channeled through my hands and into your body during a healing session. While lying down on a table, you'll receive Reiki into different parts of your body and your energy field. Sessions can be tailored for helping particular ailments, or intuitively guided for general wellness and relaxation.

What is bio-field balancing?

A bio-field is the electromagnetic aura that exists around every human being and every living thing. We are surrounded by electronic frequencies which can disrupt the natural flow of energy in the bio-field. Balancing sessions help bring the bio-field back into its natural state of coherence, primarily with the use of tuning forks. I locate places of dissonance by listening to the changing overtones in the forks, and then use the forks to guide that energy back into a state of coherence. It is most effective with repeated sessions, having some time to integrate in between.

How is bio-field balancing different from a private sound bath?

Both sessions involve working with the clients energy field, placing sounds in different spots around the body while the client lays on a table. Bio-field balancing primarily uses tuning forks and singing bowls, and a private sound bath will incorporate a much wider variety of instruments as well as my vocalization. There is also more of a set procedure with bio-field balancing, while private sound baths are more intuitively guided.

What's the difference between a voice lesson and a voice medicine coaching?

A voice lesson focuses primarily on the performance aspects of singing. This includes vocal exercises, breathing techniques, reading and memorizing music, and developing a performance persona. A voice medicine coaching also includes many voice and breathing exercises, but these are practiced with the intention to embody mental, emotional, and spiritual strength in addition to vocal strength. We talk more about how it feels to use the voice, and identify any energetic blocks. The voice is viewed as a tool to help release these blocks and strengthen your ability to express yourself authentically.
